Food: greenhouse gas emissions across the supply chain

Food remains an integral part of global production, accounting for about a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions (1). In addition to producing greenhouse gases during production, processing, packaging, and transportation, some foods, such as beef and chocolate, require large amounts of land to grow and produce. Many forests and green spaces are converted into farms during this phase, causing huge potential damage to nature. (e.g. desertification of land, loss of biodiversity, reduction of environmental resilience)

The charts on the left show the greenhouse gas emissions from food production measured in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents (kgCO2eq), categorised by production processes of the supply chain in different colours.

Interactivity of chart:

-Click on the color stack (chart/legend) to display the individual emission profiles. Click the stack again to go back to full-section

-Click the checkbox in the upper left corner to explore which production processes account for the most emissions for each food production (in %).
